"Urology is a fascinating field. It's interesting because we not only do surgery, but we also diagnose." Dr. Vaughan of New York-Presbyterian Hospital Weill Cornell Medical Center describes the many different aspects of urology and the many functions that urologists have, from diagnosis through surgery. Dr. Vaughan also notes how urologists treat everyone, including all ages and both sexes.
Urologists, better than most specialists, seem to thrive on innovation. I mean we love to put ourselves out of business.
Urology is a fascinating field. It's interesting because we not only do surgery, but we also diagnose. So take a patient with bleeding in the urinary tract, in the urine, we would do the diagnostic studies, we would do the what we call endoscopic studies, and if it needed surgery we would treat them surgically, if it was a simple Urinary Tract Infection we would treat them medically. Secondly, we treat all ages, boths sexes, and have unique sub-domains within the field. If you look at Weill Cornell department of urology you will see us work on techniques which are not available anywhere else in the world. Some of these are ready for primetime, a number of them are in the laboratory. But we constantly have a fertile field of students, residents, fellows and attendants really transforming the field of urology.
