Life Therapy Series: Treating Depression With Yoga
Avoiding painful emotions can be a destructive way of handling depressive thoughts. Sitting with the emotional pain, and learning to accept it, is the ideal way to heal, but how can yoga help? Jasmin Terrany, LMHC, teaches us that the practice of yoga is fundamental in learning how to get over depression.
"Yoga and Depression"
"The practice of yoga and being able to sit with internal discomfort, is fundamental in learning how to get over depression. It really gets you into your body and it makes you really aware of your body. For example, if you're in a posture and it's very painful, the idea isn't to avoid the pain. It's to actually breathe, and sit with the pain, and let your body kind of fall into it, and accept that it's there, which is a very similar way to handle the very painful feelings of depression. Is learning how to sit with it, learning how to be with it, take care of it. Not running away from it, not trying to avoid it, not trying to get rid of it, but learning how to tend to it properly."
