"The best method of prevention is really to eat right and exercise." Dr. Armin Tehrany, Orthopedic surgeon of Mount Sinai Hospital, reviews the best ways to go about preventing a shoulder injury without compromising your active lifestyle.
Doctor Tehrany:
The best method of prevention is really to eat right and exercise.
We're a more much active population than we use to be, but the shoulders may not be ready for that and so that can lead to a lot of wear and tear.
I do not recommend that people avoid sports, you have to live your life, you want to enjoy your life. But I do recommend that they try to make sure that the shoulder joint is properly fit.
Rotator cuff tears start becoming real common when patients are about 40 years old. The older the patients get the more likely they are to tear their rotator cuff. The best method of prevention is really to eat right and exercise. So by properly strengthening the muscles, not only in the shoulder joint, but in the shoulder blade, behind the shoulder joint one can decrease the chance of dislocations, rotator cuff tears, bone spurs and the like.
