Doctor Dinner:
The research that's been done on the well being of children after anesthesia on problems ranging from intellectual functioning through growth have all come up pretty much uniformly negative on untoward effects.
The question of anesthesia safety, both short and long term for a child, has come up frequently and the concerns are many - neurologic development, physical, emotional development, "will this give rise to a post traumatic stress syndrome, will this change his demeanor, his emotional state"? Overwhelmingly research on this is that there is no long acting untoward effects from general anesthesia on a child.
The drugs we use are short acting and as long as the surgery and the anesthesia proceed well the child's well being is ensured and there's no problem at the end of it.
