Transcript for "Patient's Individuality" featuring Dr. Vaughan
We like evidence based medicine, however, we can't ever lose the individuality.
We here at Weill Cornell treat every patient as an individual. So it's hard to generalize, so it's really is fairly simple, you sit and listen to the patient, for instance, do you think you have an infection because you burn when you urinate, or do you have shaking chills and fever. To me, shaking chills and fever means kidney, burning and stinging means bladder, the treatment is gonna be quite different, the evaluation is gonna be quite different. Yes, we treat people differently. A very reliable patient I might treat for 5-7 days and tell them to come back after 10. A patient I'm afraid may not come back again, they're in the emergency room, they're drifting through town, I may give them a large dose, make sure I hand it to them, that they take the pills, and just give them one single day treatment, because I'm afraid I won't see them again.
