Ovarian Cysts - Alisha's Story
In this episode, Alisha recounts her experience with an ovarian cyst. Discover the details and find out what Alisha did to help combat this common affliction.
Hi. I'm Alisha. I'm 22. I'm from the Bronx. I was at sleep-away camp in the summer. I started feeling like really sharp pains in my like lower abdomen and I thought it was just like period craps or something like that, or just like bloated or something of that nature. But then it started to get really sharp and painful and I could like barely make it like walking up a hill. They sent me to the hospital and they wouldn't give me pain killers when I got there because they thought I had an appendicitis and then upon closer examination, they saw a ruptured ovarian cyst, which was what caused all the lower abdomen pain. I hadn't really heard of ovarian cysts so I didn't really know what it was, but I immediately thought cancer.
I talked to my parents and my -my mom, and my aunt, and my aunt had ovarian cysts too, so she told me not to be concerned, that birth control usually helps, and it's pretty -it's pretty common. They put me on, it's like a generic brand of something else. It's covered by my insurance, so that's what I took, and that worked. I mean, it's, yeah, you know, it's done its job in birth controlling and I haven't had any problems since then. So no complaints.
