Depression Series: Prevalence of Depression in the Population
One common belief among people who are depressed is that they are alone. Well, Dr. Fieve, author of the recently published book "Bipolar Breakthrough," is here to settle the score, and show you that more people are out there suffering in silence than you think.
"Prevalence of Depression in the Population"
"10% of the entire population has either mild depression or severe hospitalizable suicidal depression; that's the spectrum, the range. These people then are the major depressive disorder with the suicide and the can't get out of bed, and the hospitalization; they represent 4 to 5 % of the population. The dysthysmics, mild depression, that are going around working on Wall Street and everyplace else, not working up to capacity, don't feel like going out on a date usually, they're another 6 or 8 %.
So we add this up, we've got 10% of the population is depressed. That's the biggest epidemiological market out there of any illness in psychiatry, depression."
