Breast Tumor: Angela's Story - Episode 1 Transcript

My name's Angela. I'm 20 years old and I had a breast tumor. I was 16 years old and I was in the shower and I know they always tell you you should check your breasts to make sure you don't find a lump, but one day I found like a mass and it had like a little bit of movement in my right breast. I got really nervous and really scared at the time and I was living on my own, so I really didn't have a family or a network to help me go through it, so I had to make an appointment with like a female doctor just to make sure I was okay. Once I got there and the woman examined, she said this definitely isn't a cyst, this is a tumor so we're going to have to run some tests to make sure that it isn't cancerous. We'll let you know in a week. So that whole week it was like very stressful because you're still in high school and I didn't have someone to really talk to about it that knew me personally and they called me back in and they said, well, right now we're pretty sure that it's benign and as long as there isn't rapid growth you should be fine. You don't have to get surgery for a while. So it started out like the size of a marble and it grew to the size of like a chestnut within a month and it gave me so much pain, and I couldn't exercise and I couldn't have a lot of movement, sport bras didn't help, nothing helped really so they said all right, we're going to have to bring you into surgery right away because if this persists, something bad might really happen.
